The Barbour World

Barbour, on Water Street

In 1894 John Barbour began supplying oilskins to the sailors and fishermen of South Shields. More than 130 years on, Barbour is still a family business, and the Bedale and Beaufort are still made by hand in the town.

Our shop at 45 Water Street carries the waxed jackets, quilts, knitwear, shirts and accessories, and the full range is here to shop online.

Better with every mile

A waxed jacket is made to be worn hard, on the land, in the rain and over the bonnet at the end of the day. Barbour first offered re-waxing and repairs in its 1921 catalogue, and today its Re-Loved service cleans, re-waxes and repairs returned jackets so they are ready for a new home.

Made by hand

Rewaxed, never replaced

Once a year the tin comes out. Fresh wax is worked in by hand, warmed until it settles into the cotton, and the jacket is ready for another season of weather. Perspective & Patina is our record of the Barbour story, from South Shields in 1894 to the jackets on our rails in Exeter today.
